SINGLE ROW TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS

Optimal precision and single-direction load management

Single row tapered roller bearings are designed to accommodate combined radial and axial loads. Because they support axial loads in one direction only, they are typically mounted in pairs, opposing another bearing to manage bidirectional forces effectively.

The separable design allows the inner ring assembly (cone) and outer ring (cup) to be mounted independently. This modularity simplifies installation and maintenance, and makes it possible to set precise clearance or preload during assembly for optimal operational rigidity.

Key features

  • Contact angles between 10° and 30° provide flexibility to match axial load capacity to specific application requirements.
  • Designed to handle both radial and axial loads while helping reduce friction and control operating temperatures.
  • The cup and cone assemblies can be mounted separately, simplifying bearing installation and removal.
  • Optimised roller-flange geometry helps minimise friction and heat generation during operation.

Advantages

Low friction running

  • Promotes hydrodynamic lubricant film formation at the critical contact point.
  • Reduces frictional heat and flange wear.
  • Minimises operating noise.
  • Maintains stable preload levels throughout service life.

Long service life

  • Distributes load evenly across the roller surface.
  • Reduces stress peaks at the roller ends.
  • Handles shaft deflection more effectively.
  • Less sensitive to minor misalignment under real operating conditions.

Consistent reliability

  • Provides superfinished contact surfaces at the roller-flange interface.
  • Supports stable hydrodynamic lubricant film formation.
  • Ensures smooth and consistent rotation.
  • Maintains reliable performance across the full operating speed range.

Rigid arrangement

  • Can be adjusted against a second bearing with controlled preload.
  • Creates a rigid and stable bearing arrangement.
  • Provides precise shaft positioning.
  • Offers high stiffness in both axial directions.

Separable & interchangeable

  • Cone assembly and cup are fully separable components.
  • Allows independent mounting and dismounting.
  • Simplifies inspection and maintenance.
  • Standardised dimensions allow interchangeability with premium series.
  • No changes are required to the existing housing or shaft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tapered roller bearings are used wherever a shaft carries both radial load and axial thrust at the same time. Common applications include industrial gearboxes, wheel hubs, mining crushers, agricultural machinery, cement plant equipment, and machine tool spindles.

Four components: the outer ring (cup), the inner ring (cone), the tapered rollers, and the cage. The cup and cone are separable, so each can be mounted independently onto the shaft and into the housing.

The separable design allows the cup to be fitted into the housing and the cone assembly onto the shaft independently. This simplifies installation, makes alignment easier, and allows precise preload to be set during assembly.

Preload is the controlled axial force applied to a bearing during installation to eliminate internal play. In tapered roller bearings, preload can be precisely adjusted because the cup and cone mount separately. Correct preload directly affects shaft positioning accuracy and bearing service life.

Both radial load (perpendicular to the shaft) and axial load (along the shaft) simultaneously. The ratio of radial to axial capacity depends on the contact angle of the bearing — a larger contact angle handles more axial load.

The angle between the bearing axis and the line of contact between roller and raceway. A larger contact angle means higher axial load capacity. The contact angle is selected based on the load conditions of the specific application.

SAE 52100 high-carbon chromium bearing steel for the rings and rollers. This grade provides the hardness, toughness, and fatigue resistance needed for long service life under high combined loads. At V-CUBE, all rings and rollers are manufactured from SAE 52100 steel with no substitution on raw material.

Service life depends on correct specification, proper installation, and appropriate lubrication. When all three are right, tapered roller bearings are among the longest-lasting bearing types in heavy industrial use. Crowned roller profiles and optimised flange finish at V-CUBE contribute further to extended service intervals.

The most common causes are incorrect preload at installation, contaminated or insufficient lubrication, shaft misalignment, and operating beyond the bearing's rated load. Most failures are preventable with correct specification and installation practice.

Yes. V-CUBE bearings are manufactured to ISO dimensional standards and are direct replacements for equivalent series from established premium import brands. No changes to shaft dimensions, housing dimensions, or maintenance procedures are required.
